The fashionable living room of mystery writer Charles Condomine and his wife, Ruth, is the setting for Waterworks Players production of Blithe Spirit. The Condomines are getting ready to hold an after-dinner séance with friends to provide research for Charles’ start of a new novel. They expect it to be a hoot, and it is—but not in the way they imagine.
Written by Tony Lifetime Achievement Award winner Noel Coward, Blithe Spirit is a celebrated comedy about ghosts that set a London West End long-run record in the 1940s. The play did well on Broadway and was made into a film in 1945 starring Rex Harrison. In 1964 a musical adaptation, High Spirits, was made from Coward’s original version. Radio and television versions have also entertained audiences along with West End and Broadway revivals.
Charles White returns to the stage as Charles Condomine, an intelligent and urbane novelist. Caitlin Mazura is casted as Ruth, Charles’ second wife who is jealous of her husband’s relationship with his first wife. Martha Womack is Madame Arcati, the local eccentric medium Charles brings to conduct the séance at his home. Jeffree Hudson is Elvira, Charles Condomine’s deceased first wife who returns as a ghost and complicates Charles’s and Ruth’s lives. Greg Tsigaridas plays Dr. Bradman, a good friend of the Condomines. Rachel Witham is Mrs. Bradman, who is simple, naïve, and fascinated about being in the presence of a medium. Penelope Dorsey is Edith, the Condomine’s maid who is nervous and tears around the house as breakneck speck hoping to do things right.
Waterworks’ Artistic Director Dudley Sauve is directing the production with assistance from Moffatt Evans (set designer), Linda Rofe (costume designer), Erica Evans (stage manager), and Scott Chapman (light designer), and Don Blaheta (assistant stage manager).
The show runs October 12, 13, 16 and 17 at 8pm. In addition, there will be a matinee performance on Sunday October 14 at 2pm.
Join the fun to see how a pleasant and informative evening séance turns into a series of madcap misadventures when Elvira’s ghost materializes with a plan to get Charles back, even if it kills him!
