Caitlin Mazura will make her directing debut at Waterworks Players on September 7th with Lucky Charms, a collection of seven plays written by a local playwright Brett Hursey. “Think of this like a collection of short stories,” says Mazura, “these are comedies that feature a host of zany characters and absurdist plots.”
This is the fourth time Waterworks has presented mini plays penned by Hursey, a Longwood professor who teaches creative writing. “Each time, he wows the audiences with characters who find themselves in strange situations,” notes Waterworks Players’ Artistic Director Dudley Sauve. “We are thrilled to welcome him back to our stage again.”
Unconventional characters is a hallmark for many Hursey plays. In Lucky Charms, the opening play has three goldfish talking to each other, although one starts out dead. Another work has a guy taking riding lessons, but has an imaginary clown who follows him around.
Hursey’s works have been produced in five foreign countries and in more than 100 theatres in the United States. In 2016, Hursey had a full-length play produced at an off-Broadway theatre. The show was so popular that the producer asked Hursey for permission to reprise the show.
The cast for Lucky Charms contains many favorite Waterworks regulars including Sherri Davenport, Craig Dodson, Kolby Grimsley, Leigh Lunsford, Mike Montgomery, Christy Moore, Cole Pillow, Charlotte Trant, Greg Tsigaridas, Billy Tucker, Jordan Whiley, Clint Wright, and Pam Wright.
Performances are on September 7th and 8th at 8:00 pm. Reserved Tickets are $12. Wine is also available, costing $16 for a ticket and first glass of wine.
